About Looniefy
Built by an immigrant, for immigrants – because nobody hands you a financial manual when you land at the airport.
Hi, I’m Daniel.
I moved to Canada from Brazil in 2018 and settled in right in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area.
Like most newcomers, I arrived with a plan. What I didn’t have was a guide to the Canadian financial system.
Back in Brazil I understood how money worked. I knew the rules, the institutions, the shortcuts. Then I landed in Canada and realized – almost nothing transfers. No credit history. No familiarity with TFSAs, RRSPs, or the credit score system. No idea which bank account was actually designed for someone in my situation. It was like learning to walk again, financially speaking.
The frustrating part? The information existed – it was just buried under content written for people who were born here.
That’s why I created Looniefy.
Looniefy is a finance blog built specifically for immigrants and newcomers to Canada. No jargon. No assumptions. Just honest, practical guidance for people who are starting their Canadian financial journey from zero — exactly like I did.
My wife and I bring a combined background in Economics, Finance, and International Business to everything we publish here. She spent years working in the Canadian banking system and holds a Master’s in Economics. I hold a post-graduation in Finance and International Business. Between the two of us, we’ve lived the immigrant experience and studied the financial system from the inside.
We fact-check everything. We write from experience. And when we don’t know something, we say so.

The Name
The Loonie is Canada’s dollar coin – and the unofficial symbol of Canadian financial life. The “-fy” is for doing exactly that: making Canadian finance work for you, not against you.
Welcome to Looniefy. You found the guide we wish we’d had.
